Biased Pune Mirror heading nowhere

Today’s Pune Mirror features a front page brawl against MNS supremo Raj Thackeray. The article is aimed at discrediting Raj. Let me make it clear…this post is not written to support Raj in any form. But the only intention is to point out the fundamental flaws in assumptions of PM.

Mirror has interviewed a bunch of people. The selection seems to be totally off the mark. Let me take you through the interviewees-(I dont want to mention names, so I will just write which group of people they represent)

  • Politicians- Yeah, right! You expect them to talk FOR Raj Thackeray?
  • A scientist- Fair choice, but the guy seemed to be in accord with Raj, even if not to that extremity.
  • Educationalists- Why would they not want North Indian students? ‘Donations’ …always welcome!
  • A bunch of NI students- They are the victims.
  • Student Leader- One of them
  • Restaurateurs- They think their customers will be lost. But one gentleman thought that culture is changing and thats not good.

Politicians, Scientists are not the victims in any logical frame.

Students…basically, Raj just wants these people to behave. Are they not ready to do that? If they are they are not the victims.

Educationalists…how many times have read about IT raids and large number of unaccounted money they possess? So if their ‘unaccounted money’ is stopped they can’t be called victims.

Restaurateurs…yes 7-8 lakh of NI students do matter to them. But again they are not their only customers. No doubt some of them will be deeply affected.

Pune Mirror tries lamely to portray Builders as victims. Thats totally preposterous! Not a single builder was interviewed and we know that they really don’t care who buys the flat. They are sure…if students don’t buy them, somebody else will.

People they have chose do not even represent quarter of Pune’s population. For a fair opinion, they should have interviewed Housing Society chairmen, landlords, neighbors of NI students, ‘AAM JUNTA’ along with them.

So the whole drama created by Mirror to show ‘Pune cannot survive without North Indian students’ is utterly ridiculous. And the headline ‘Huge NO to Raj’ is completely baseless!

Disclaimer- I have nothing against NI students and I feel they have as much right to live in the city as anybody else. But I believe that Pune’s economy is not run by them. They are one of the factors.

The recent statement given by Jaya Bachchan at the promotion of her sons movie was extremely insulting. These statements do not hurt us as much as Times Of India supplement Pune Mirror, who have gone ahead and given a very biased opinion about the whole issue. The Opinion section dated 10th september 2008 has the opinions of only those who support Jaya Bachchan’s statement. I would like to know how many people had Pune Mirror interviewed before publishing this biased opinion. Many people including myself feel that what she (Jaya) has spoken is very insulting, not because she spoke in Hindi, but for what she has said, smeared at us, laughed and made fun of Marathi and the people of Maharashtra. She has taken up this issue when there was no issue to do so.
The Bachchans should not forget that it is the capital of Maharashtra, Mumbai that has brought them the position they behold today, and not vice-versa.
Another issue i would like to bring to your notice, is the way in which the media is playing with the issue. Raj Thackeray has not objected to her use of Hindi, but to what she has said, and the sarcasm behind it. The media should be neutral and not biased as per convenience.

  3. Rahul Says:

    Pune Mirror is really Biased.
What amazes me most that in Pune Talk, how come these (Pune Mirror) people always found the North Indians on every Roads of Pune to express their opinion, especially on Jaya Bacchan Issue. I observed, 4 out of every 5, opinions in Pune Talk are from North Indians.
In case of Jaya Bacchan Issue, Marathi people getting feelings hurt is logical. Imagine that you have a guest from say, Timbuktu. That guest stays at your home, eats what you cook and then burps that, I am from Timbuku, we have that we have this? every now and then. You will tolerate this for few times. But a time will come when you may feel this irritating.

Marathi Manoos has simple thought. You come here, No Problem.
You stay here, you earn here, you eat here, No Problem.
(Maharashtra has Power to fill millions of empty stomachs.)
But, when you talk, you say that arre, we are UP wallas or Dilli wallas !!!
(And laugh as if Marathis are fools)

    Comming back to Pune Mirror:
Eiether Pune Mirror is TRUE or It is biased.
If TRUE, then its a great worry for MNS, for every road in pune has more North Indians roaming than Marathis.
Else, for sure, PUNE MIRROR is a biased news paper.
Unfortunately, it comes free with ToI, good thing is that it adds to weight of old NEWS paper and one can get good returns on selling “Raddi”
    :)

This is in reference to excellent article covered by Ms.Anuradha Mascarenhas of India Express today regarding City hospitals keeping clean of Bio Medical Waste.
The article seems to be influenced by some individuals for their personal interest.

I have been following this Bio Medical Waste issue very closely after the current explosion & want to share few facts about it.

Bio Medical waste (BMW) is one of the most hazardous waste we aren’t aware of. It can lead to many dreaded diseases.

The exposure to hazardous health care waste can result into:

    1. Infection.

    2. Genotoxicity and Cytotoxicity

    3. Chemical toxicity

    4. Radioactivity hazards.

    5. Physical injuries

    6. Public sensitivity.

    1. Infection: -The infectious agents can enter in the body through a puncture, abrasion, or cut in the skin; through mucous membranes; by inhalation and ingestion. Commonest infections, which can result from mishandling of hospital/health care waste, are gastro enteric through faeces and/or vomit (Salmonella, Shigella spp., Vibrio Cholera, Helminthes; Hepatitis A), Respiratory through inhaled secretions; saliva (Mycobacterium tuberculosis; measles virus; streptococcus pneumonae), Ocular infections through eye secretions (Herpes virus), Genital infections (Neisseria gonnorrhoeae; herpes virus), Skin infection through pus (Streptococcus spp.), meningitis through Cerebrospinal fluid (neisseria meningitides), AIDS through blood and sexual secretions (HIV), Haemorrhagic fevers through body fluids (Junin, Lassa, Ebola and Marburg viruses), Septicaemia and bacteraemia through blood (staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus, enterobacter, klebsiella and streptococcus) and Viral Hepatitis B & C through blood and body fluids (hepatitis B and C viruses).

    2. Genotoxicity and Cytotoxicity: – many cytotoxic drugs are extremely irritant and have harmful local effects after direct contact with skin and eyes (alkylating agents; Intercalating agents; vinca alkaloids and derivatives and epipodophyllotoxins). Many neoplastic drugs are carcinogenic and mutagenic; secondary neoplasia is known to be associated with chemotherapy.

    3. Chemical toxicity: -many of chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs used in health care establishments are hazardous (e.g. toxic, genotoxic, corrosive, flammable, reactive, explosive and shock-sensitive). They may cause intoxication by acute or chronic exposure, injuries including burns, poisoning.

    4. Radioactivity hazards: – The radioactive waste exposure may cause headache, dizziness, vomiting, genotoxicity and tissue damage.

    5. Physical injuries: – May result from sharps, chemicals and explosive agents

    6. Public sensitivity: – The general public is very sensitive about visual impact of the anatomical waste, recognizable body parts including foetuses if handled improperly.

    (Ref:http://health.delhigovt.nic.in/Health/files/Bio-Medical%20Waste%20Status%202006.pdf)

BMW produced is roughly calculated @ 275 gms per bed per day in an average running hospital. ( it goes upto 350 gms in busy hospitals like Sassoon . As per old (2 year old) statistics Pune has over 9500 beds. Thus BMW produced per day in Pune only from Hospitals is nearly 3 tonnes per day. Laboratories,CLinics & Blood Banks are stilled to be considered.

    (Ref:http://209.85.175.104/search?q=cache:BU2oQTZeNcgJ:medind.nic.in/maa/t04/i4/maat04i4p379.pdf+biomedical+waste )

Presently no facility in & around 150 kms (permissible distance for transportation of BMW) of Pune is capable of disposing this quantum of BMW.

Currently BMW from Pune is being shifted to Satara, Talegaon & PCMC. The detailed survey of these 3 facilities will make us say; Are these facilities fit for disposing BMW?

    About YCM facility in Pimpri,

    i) The incinerator is put up in the basement of the hospital. Any explosion of this sort can endanger the life of 1500 patients.

ii) The BMW waste filled carry bags (as per the norms of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board – M.P.C.B.) are stored very next to the Laundry – meant for providing disinfected bed sheets, pillow covers , aprons etc. to the hospital.

iii) Also can be found medicines & drugs stored for the hospital very next to this BMW storage. BMW contains all sorts of expired Drugs exposing the possibility for both types of drugs getting mixed.

Thus can we say that this facility is doing its job fine? Are they able to?

As per M.P.C.B. norms minimum space for such a facility should be of 1 acre and possibly far off from residential area. So isn’t this facility violating the basic norms from M.P.C.B?

Should such facility be setup in a hospital premise, especially when government has taken efforts to setup a common facility?

PCMC is generating around 1.5 tonnes of BMW daily. The facility can burn not over 60 Kg/hour. Also this facility cannot work round the clock. Thus YCM facility cannot dispose the BMW generated in its area. Then how do they plan to dispose the extra BMW brought from Pune.

Is the BMW properly disposed (within 36 – 48 hours) as made mandatory by M.P.C.B?

BMW generated in Pune is not being properly collected. Hospitals responsible towards the health of Puneites & are caring to call PMC and get the BMW collected. But are all the hospitals and waste managing committee in all these hospitals are patient enough to await till the PMC gets it collected.

I am aware of an occasion a day prior where a famous hospital dumped BMW in black carry bags in canal water.

So can we say that after the explosion in premises of Pune BMW disposal facility, the BMW disposal is streamlined or city hospitals have found ways to keep clean?

How can we claim this without actually taking the pain to look into the ground reality?

Should we trust representatives of our community to feel the pain & danger we are facing?

In the general body meeting of 24th September 2008, I saw corporators fighting to find out who is responsible for the death of 7 workers & the suspension of Chief Medical Officer for negligence.

Not a single corporator seemed to be caring for lives of around 70 lakh population of pune.

Sir, requesting not to consider all the information mentioned above to be the ultimate truth. The concerned reporter should visit these places and gather information as mentioned in the provided link of the various surveys done in this issue.

Can reporters print any issues without going to the depth of the same ?

  6. Mady Says:

Today I saw few pics of couples sitting at Shanivar wada in the 1st page. Now the pune mirror is blaming them to spoil Indian heritage. Now they have also taken interview from few party leaders ……as usual (BJP,MNS etc).
This is really downfall of Indian journalism.
What annoys me is that at this critical time when India is facing hell lot of problem.
    1) There are floods in Bihar,Orissa…people are not starving to death there,
    2) From another side terrorist attacks are becoming frequent. Again there was bomb blast at Gujarat.
    3) Just today morning i saw in news that 40 people died in stampede at chamunda Temple near jodhpur.
    4) Nuclear deal is in dilemma.
So many problems are there where we need to show unity and face the challenges firmly. Now its time to bring unity, to spread news where we can encourage n say that we are one. But just to make some money we are adding spicy news and making a cheap journalism.
Now I feel this is the least thing we should be bothered about. Not only that Pune mirror is asking different parties what they think about it and further encouraging MNS,VHP or similar groups. This will again raise some serious disputes.
Finally we will be in loss….again the same media will say these parties are being dictator (generally said as “Gundagardi” by media).
But who influenced them for this is the same media……..
Who made this an issue is the same media………
Why???? Just to make some money.
If a couple is sitting (may be very close) at shanivar wada is indecent then is it decent to take their pics without their knowledge and putting in newspapers.

Is this the right time to show this small issues and divide people and influence disputes and fights within countries OR this is time to encourage Indians to stand firm and to flow a spirit that “we are one” and we will fight back against terrorism, natural calamities….
The upcoming media has to decide what times appeals to them????
Coz its only media that is the easiest way to connect people similarly the same media is easiest way to raise disputes,
So rather than getting worried that few couples sitting at shanivar wada spoiled the heritage of India our own pune mirror should look for a real news.
The worst part of that news was it was written if some tourists will come to India what image they will take about it………..That’s really funny.
I mean that reporter is worried that a tourist will think ……”whoooooow these Indian have kuchi puchi :-)
If really worried about tourism then i think all are clear that rather than Watching couples at Tourist place the tourists are more scared to come India coz of insecurity they feel. That may be coz of terrorism and also coz of so many incidence we see where tourists are molested. So if Pune mirror is worried then they should write an article how secured they are…..do some R&D in that. Ask the steps taken by police.
    But no………….
Neither they will do this nor they will help to fight terror or existing problems. The only thing they are doing is raising some more problems and creating disputes and influencing parties for fight…..

    Please change the thinking…….

  7. Adi Says:

Thats right. The answer is change the mindset!

  8. Sameer Says:

    Friends !
The TOI and Pune Mirror, are completely biased.
If you visit their office anywhere in Maharashtra, you will fond mostly North Indians working. So no need to surprise that the opinions are biased.
My friend who works in TOI, who is a Marathi, told, me how the Marathi reporters are pressurised not to write and print anything to support Marathi cause and Raj/ Bal Thackerey.
From that day, I stopped reading and buying TOI/PM and started reading Sakaal times, DNA, Herald !

    Sameer

  9. Adi Says:

It is difficult for one person to bring such cases forward. But ignoring them will make things worse. It is a shame for journalism in world’s largest democracy!

  10. Sameer Says:

    Friends,
Let me tell you one thing as sought from some of my friends who are North Indian journalists, there is a nexus going on, between these UP/Bihari politicians—businessman– north Indian builders in Mumbai and Maharashtra– and some Maharshtrian leaders.
Each and every move they do, each and every decision they take, may it be building SEZ and bringing in uncontrolled amount of foreign investment in Maharashtra, is towards diversification and cosmopolitisation of Maharashtra for their personal benefits and benefits of people of UP and Bihar. (Pls note, I am not against foreign investment and industrialisation, but am against the process by which it is implemented). They want to make Maharashtra Migrator’s paradise outnumbering the Marathi population and denying the existence of Marathi and Marathi people. The near future (next 15-20 years) effects will be following if the Marathi people don’t awake at this point of time —-

    1. Mumbai will be seperated from Maharashtra.
    2. Outnumbering the Marathi population in Maharashtra by influxing more and more Biharis/ UP people to capture political strength.
    3. Seperate Vidharaba from Maharashtra.
    4. Destroy the Co-operative sector in interior Maharashtra (e.g suarcane factories) and spread the north indian legs there.
    5. Privatisation of coastal areas of Konkan .
    6. Take over all the Maharashtrian banks e.g. Sangli Bank
    7. Spread of more and more North Indian culture in the form of food cuicine, clothes, TV serials, movies, use of Hindi in education.
    8. To make the Marathi people more and more financially, culturally, socially and politically weak.
    9. Development of more and more North Indian dominant housing colonies like Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Virar and many in Mumbai.
    10. Seperation of Solapur and Belgaum by influxing more and more Kannada population there.

  11. Mady Says:

I think ur very much biased ….
Again people like u who spread few roumers, are responsible for riots.
If u being an educated litrate person say that north Indian are against us….
What else we can expect from an Illetrate villager.
As ur holding so much of anger towards a region ,those people do hold and
when they brust out resulting in Riots.

Riots aganist muslims.riots aganist Criestian….against sikh and now if things go like this we will soon start fighting for regions.
Are the problem we have is not enough.
Shall the government fight against terrorism or keep on tackling internal riots.
When we will become broad minded & feel that we are one Nation.
I have been in US for many years, we have much more freedom than what they have…we have more talent, we are good in everything but the only thing we lack is the spirit that we are Indians.
We keep on fighting amoung ourselves…..saying sometimes muslims are terrorists, cristians are resposible for murder, sikhs are responsible for Indra Gandhi murder and now north Indians are planning to take Mumbai….very funny.
Whatever it is ….just remember one thing we should not blame a community, blame the person responsible for it.
Bad people are present in every region, community, caste….
So we all are Indians who want to fight BAD…not a region or community

  12. Adi Says:

@Sameer and Mady: Thats a little extreme I guess. We are talking about journalism here remember!!

  13. Mady Says:

    Sory dude…may be i overreacted.
I know we weree talking abt Journalism……
However worst may be journalism but we are proud to be in this Nation.
we all are Indians ……Right Bro :-)

    Right sameer…..

  14. Adi Says:

    Thats the spirit!

  15. Sameer Says:

    Dear Mady, Adi,
Even I am proud to be an Indian. Everything is interconnedted, and everybody has seen how the North Indian journalists have pathetically miscommunicated the Marathi cause in last few months. Even I am not supporter of people like Raj Thackrey. I dont like riots. But remember India’s greatness is its Unity in Diversity. And if you are disturbing its diversity, then you are disturbing its Unity. Then definately you are going to spread riots. Diverse cultured people were granted states to live and prosper there only because to preserve and develop regional cultures and languages. And don’t talk about America, because if you go to America, you speak in English, may it be Indian or an African, everyone will speak English. I am not against North Indians , but I am against their attitude, they always try to create North India in Maharashtra.
    1. No one wants to leave their hometown and migrate.
    2. People from UP and Bihar are migrating for two reasons.
    a. There are no job opportunities,
    b. There is no civil order or security to life and property.
    3. Every area has its own culture and traditions and people from the area want to preserve the same.
    4. There is a limit to capacity to absorb migration for any area, if the limit is crossed the migration creates local stresses.
    5. Presently every area in Maharashtra including small towns are experiencing tremendous inflow of migrants from other states including UP, Bihar and MP.
    6. This migration is putting great strain on local population and has great potential to be exploited by any politician.
    7. If any of the external power tries to take advantage, the conditions may get ripe if corrective measures are not taken in time.
    8. Solution to this problem is not to oppose but to understand the problem and find the right solutions.
    9. Right solution is to establish rule of Law in UP and Bihar which will help to create better employment opportunities.
10.Present breed of politicians from every political party without exception are incompetent to understand complexities of developments.

Key questions to UPites and Biharis:
    1. Why is it that even after more than 60 years of the independence , you have to leave your matrubhoomi and go elsewhere to seek a salary of 2500/- to 3000/- ?
    2. Why is minimum standard of living not available in UP / BIHAR ?
    3. What has happenned to the crores of rupees the central govt. has given to UP/BIHAR?
    4. Why does the political parties of UP/BIHAR have not made conditions which guarantee better leaving conditions and income inspite of so many years of ‘developemental work in their states and so much money down the drain ?
    5. Has anyone every questioned the Political parties of UP/BIHAR wether they have worked for the upliftment of the poor?

Only I want to say is that, try to be Marathi/Maharashtrian if you are in Maharashtra, then everything will be fine.

  16. Mady Says:

    Sameer !!!!

The hatred started….and it wont end soon.
    Hatred against North Indians.
IM & other terrorist groups are deviding & fighting on the name of Hindu/Muslims.
    Now MNS started North/west Indians.
Finally we ll end up fighting amoung ourselves, deviding ourself.
Some of the fact i would like to share are:
–> 90% of the IT indusrty in Maharashtra is funded & raised by Southern side. Most of us live on us
    but never have any problem.
–> 90% of the textile industries here are run by Guju’s.
–> Many of the investors we have are from North India.
–> The whole Bollywood on which half of the mumbai rules(get jobes)is fully a foreign body for us.

Key questions to all of us:
1)Why we dont have any problem if investors come from North?
2)If railway exams are fair play, then why dont we trust on our capibility?
3)Does this means that we cant compete them?
4)Does such behavior encourage other investors to set new projects & we can avail jobs?

Now if u are saying we dont want investors or anyone from North India. Then, let me tell you its consequence. We ll loose present job oppertunities & the one which are in pipe lines.
We ll be solly responsible for affecting globalisation.
Just a simple example, from dusk to dawn everyday we use a number of stuff which are imported. Some made in North, south ….etc.So if we dont allow people to come here, we are being secular & we ll be restricted in our markets.

You said try to be a Marathi if your are in Maharashtra…….some people says try to be a Hindu if you are in Hindustan…..it ll go on.Is this democracy???????
Even i am a marathi, but i am never scared that few people coming here ll change my culture.I m not that weak & i dont expect my Maratha is that weak.

  17. Sameer Says:

    LETS EMPOWER OURSELVES !!!!!!!

    Dear Mady,
I agree with you in some aspects. People should come from different places and also we should go to different places. But there should be some limit for the same. Not like Mumbai, where people are coming and coming and it never stops. Definately we Marathi people have some drawbacks. and we need to improve them. The era of awakening should occur and we Marathi people’s attitude should also change. But everything should happen keeping the culture intact. I dont agree with your comment, that coming of outsiders will not affect culture. Yes it will affect, just how it has affected Mumbai socially and politically. You know, the latest report says that Maharashtra has the highest number of unemployed youth in the country. Cities are powerhouses of every culture, and Maharashtra cities should be powerhouses of modern Maharashtrian culture just like how Rome, Copenhagen, Chennai, Tokyo, Beijing, Paris are though they are part of globalisation. And about our jobs, I really dont care about our jobs, if the era is occuring and Marathi people are changing their attitude(no matter what way), I am ready to loose my job. And I think there is no need to worry about investors, not investing in Maharashtra. Investors are coming to Maharashtra, because they have labour with good attitude, strategic location of our cities, proper law and order and good government policies and infrastructure. They are coming to Maharashtra for their profits and are not making any favour on us. And also investors never affect culturally to any society, they adapt themselves to the society at that place. There is a lot to write and debate, but to be very specific, I want the future generations of Maharashtra to take birth and live in a Marathi capitalist, Marathi Working class, Marathi laboured, Marathi modern, Marathi globalised , Marathi Cultured, Marathi Speaking world. The important thing and need is that, we the present generations should compromise and sacrifice some of our present comforts and our present ways of life…. I know, it is going to be painful. At last Dear Mady, this is a request and appeal to you and all Marathi youths, doesnt matter you agree to all my above thoughts or not, as a simple start, pls start thinking about starting your own businesses whatever and however small they might be, try always to speak in Marathi and spread Marathi culture, watch more and more Marathi movies even if you find them less glamorous, try to help the weaker Marathi people by all teh ways possible and empower them etc, etc, etc, and above BE AGGRESSIVE in whatever you do, BE PROUD TO BE MARATHI. For change to happen , we the youth, have to empower ourselves and our Marathi community in all the ways possible financially, culturally, socially. We might feel a temporary setback but one day will occur and that will be OUR DAY! OUR ERA ! Only then the hatred waves will not again occur in future like how they are flowing nowadays !

  18. Sachin Says:

    Dear Sameer,

I think people like you dont want to live in India but want to live in “Maharshtra” and word Indian has just superficial meaning to you rather say “Being Marathi is more important than being INDIAN for you”.

  19. archispeaks Says:

    Hello Friends,

I agree the sample crowd chosen by Pune mirror is never a clear depiction of Puneites, not only for this anti immigrant issue , but also for any other opninion poll they take.

  20. Sameer Says:

    Dear Sachin,
Pls go to the causes of the problem why is the reason, today we are discussing Biased Pune mirror……… only because we have internet to use…. NO !, because there is something happening , that is making us uncomfortable…… ! Pls accept this !
Regionalism is not the weakness, but the strength of our country. If each and every state and its people are powerful and influential only then India will be powerful. There has always been arguments between Moderates and Extremists Marathis and this will go on……. Today you are talking like this, only because you have a comfortable job, access to Internet and a peaceful living and so you are reluctant to any kind of change …….
I have already said, that many of you might not agree to my thoughts in my previous mail. Unless we the Marathis will Empower ourselves, these biases are going to exist……… and I dont think there is any anti-India thought in it…….

  21. Amit Says:

So where is your hero Raj at this time, when terrorists are arracking Mumbai. Where is his so called sena now? Hiding in safety? Shouldn’t we disallow Army to come to Mumbai now, because armymen are not Marathis?

  22. Adi Says:

This is not the time man! I dont know what your problem is, but you seemed to have lost the point. Read my post carefully. I am in no way supporting either Raj or North Indians. I just pointed out the idiocracy that has taken over Pune Mirror. Its very disturbing to see that ‘good citizens’ like you are wasting time in picking up petty issues at this grave hour. I will suggest you to straighten up your priorities first.

  23. Sameer Says:

    Dear Amit,
Nobody is supporting any kind of Sena or party here. And the issues discussed here are regional issues like the Pune / Mumbai mirror and not the national issues. Terrorism is a national issue. And dont forget every Marathi is also an Indian and Maharashtra is a part of Indian Union along just like Tamil Nadu and Assam. The Army has people from throughout the country.
And you cannot expect political parties to go and fight terrorists. The political parties are to rule and make and implement the security policies. Its the job of security forces to fight against the terrorists. Sorry to say, you have misunderstood the discussion going on here. I guess you see a lot of Hindi news channels and thats why your thinking is influenced by their way of talking.
Believe it, those channels are nothing but the most uncontrolled, indisciplined channels, who don’t have any standards and go to any extent to increase their TRP. The problem is that, the normal Indian doesn’t think with his own head and thinks and sees and believes whatever they show.
